Where the sources disagree

51 recorded disagreements, 46 of them between modern sources only. They are kept rather than resolved, because a site that shows you one answer where its sources gave four has made a choice it is not telling you about.

Aries

date range · modern sources only

  • Mar 20 – Apr 19The AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Mar 21 – Apr 19Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com · California Psychics editors · Trusted Psychic Mediums editors
  • Mar 21 – Apr 20Encyclopaedia Britannica editors · Astrology Answers editors
  • Mar 20 – Apr 20Wikipedia contributors

Fixed-table sites disagree by a day on both ends because the true equinox ingress moves by year and by time zone. Bodhastra computes it — see decisions §B1.

lucky number(s) · modern sources only

  • 1, 8, 17ZodiacSign.com
  • 6, 18, 41, 77, 83California Psychics editors

No overlap at all between the two lists found. Numerology-style number lists appear to be invented independently per modern site rather than drawn from any shared tradition; treat as decorative, not attestable tradition.

keyword mantra · modern sources only

  • "I Am"Horoscope.com editorial staff
  • "I can overcome"Astrology Answers editors

Modern pop-astrology convention of a one-line sign 'mantra'; no classical basis found. Only 2 independent phrasings recovered — below attestation floor either way.

temperament word for the sign's excess

  • hasty, passionate temper (Olcott)William Tyler Olcott
  • impulsive / reckless (modern consensus)Horoscope.com editorial staff · Cafe Astrology · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Astrology Answers editors · ZodiacSign.com · Trusted Psychic Mediums editors

Classical humoral language ('choleric', 'bestial') describes the same underlying trait modern sources soften to 'impulsive' or 'reckless' — same claim across eras, different register. Recorded as one lineage of a claim, not a real disagreement.

Taurus

date range

  • Apr 19 – May 20William Tyler Olcott
  • Apr 20 – May 20Horoscope.com editorial staff · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Astrology Answers editors
  • Apr 20 – May 21Wikipedia contributors

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true ingress moves by year; Olcott (1911) also predates the modern-consensus start date by a day. Bodhastra computes the exact ingress rather than using a fixed table — see decisions doc.

primary ruled body part

  • Neck, throatWilliam Tyler Olcott · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · PsychicSource editorial staff
  • Heart, upper body, thyroidKarma & Luck editorial staff

Neck/throat is the overwhelming classical-through-modern consensus (medical astrology tradition). One modern source substitutes heart/thyroid, likely conflating Taurus's heart-chakra correspondence (a New Age overlay) with traditional medical astrology's throat rulership.

Babylonian name for the constellation

  • "Bull of Heaven" (GU4.AN.NA, MUL.APIN)Wikipedia contributors
  • "Bull of Light" (Akkadian)William Tyler Olcott

Both trace to the same Mesopotamian bull-constellation tradition; the discrepancy may reflect Akkadian vs. Sumerian naming layers rather than a genuine contradiction, but the wording differs enough between sources to record both.

lucky/associated colour · modern sources only

  • PinkHoroscope.com editorial staff · PsychicSource editorial staff
  • GreenBee Wolf-Ray, LoveToKnow · Karma & Luck editorial staff
  • BrownBee Wolf-Ray, LoveToKnow

No colour reaches the 3-source floor; modern sites disagree substantially, likely because 'lucky colour' has no classical basis for Taurus and each modern compiler picked differently (green/brown track the earth element; pink tracks Venus).

Gemini

date range (tropical Sun-sign boundaries) · modern sources only

  • May 20 – June 20/21/22The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Astro Library · Emma.ca editors
  • May 21 – June 20/21Encyclopaedia Britannica editors · Wikipedia contributors · Astrology King · Horoscope.com editorial staff · Trusted Psychic Mediums editors
  • May 22 – June 21SunSigns.org editors

Popular sites disagree by 1-2 days on both ends because the true solar ingress moves by year and because many round to fixed calendar tables. Bodhastra computes the exact ingress rather than using a fixed table — see decisions doc §B1.

planetary exaltation in Gemini · modern sources only

  • North Node and/or Ceres exalted (modern addition)Wikipedia contributors

None of the classical sources consulted (Ptolemy, Firmicus, Sepharial, Raphael, Lilly) assign an exalted planet to Gemini in the traditional seven-planet dignity scheme. North Node/Ceres exaltation appears only in the modern reference source and should be flagged as a later addition, not inherited tradition, if used.

mythological identity of the Twins · modern sources only

  • Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri)Wikipedia contributors
  • Apollo and Hercules (alternate classical identification)Astrology King

Castor/Pollux is the dominant identification, but at least one source notes an alternate classical pairing of Apollo and Hercules for the twin figures. Worth a human double-check against a classical mythography source before stating as settled.

Gemini–Virgo relationship · modern sources only

  • Poor romantic/compatibility match (air vs. earth elemental clash)The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff

Classical technical astrology treats Gemini and Virgo as connected through shared Mercury rulership; modern popular compatibility guides rate the pairing low because they weight element/modality clash over shared rulership. Both are real traditions, not a contradiction to resolve — worth a 'traditions differ' callout.

Cancer

body part ruled by Cancer · modern sources only

  • Breast, chestDeborah Houlding

Skyscript's melothesia (breast/chest) reflects the standard classical sign-specific attribution; Sepharial's list instead reflects his generic 'movable sign' health category. Both single-sourced in this pass — a human should check Manilius' melothesia (Astronomica) and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos III.xii directly, since both are known to address body-part rulership and were not fully retrievable here.

date range end · modern sources only

  • July 22The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Susan Miller · Horoscope.com editorial staff · Labyrinthos · Jaime McLeod, Farmers' Almanac · The Old Farmer's Almanac
  • July 23Wikipedia contributors

Fixed-table sites converge on July 22, but the true solstice-anchored ingress moves by year; Wikipedia and some almanac sources note a possible June 20 start / July 23 end in some years. Bodhastra computes the exact ingress rather than citing a fixed date — see decisions doc §B1.

signature colour · modern sources only

  • Silver-grey, sea-green, pale blueDeborah Houlding · Susan Miller
  • VioletHoroscope.com editorial staff

Two independent modern/reference sources converge on lunar silver-sea-green tones; one outlier (Horoscope.com) assigns violet as a 'spirit colour' instead.

Cancer–Capricorn compatibility · modern sources only

  • high (opposite-sign complementarity / shared seriousness about security)The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · PureWow editorial staff
  • challengingJaime McLeod, Farmers' Almanac

Most modern sources treat Cancer-Capricorn as a strong opposites-attract earth/water pairing; Farmers' Almanac instead lists Capricorn among Cancer's challenging signs. Genuine disagreement, not clearly resolved by consensus.

single best love match · modern sources only

  • ScorpioThe AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · PureWow editorial staff
  • Taurus and Pisces (Scorpio not mentioned)Horoscope.com editorial staff

Horoscope.com's 'top love matches' list omits Scorpio entirely, which is the consensus top pick elsewhere. Possibly a simplification rather than a genuine doctrinal disagreement.

Leo

date range · modern sources only

  • Jul 23 – Aug 22The Old Farmer's Almanac · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · California Psychics editors · Trusted Psychic Mediums editors
  • Jul 22 – Aug 23Wikipedia contributors
  • Jul 23 – Aug 21SunSigns.org editors

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true solar ingress into Leo moves by year and by time zone; Bodhastra computes it rather than quoting a fixed table.

lucky/associated colour · modern sources only

  • Gold / Yellow / OrangeZodiacSign.com · Horoscope.com editorial staff · California Psychics editors

Raphael's 17th/18th-century-derived classical assignment does not match the modern 'solar gold' consensus at all - worth flagging as a genuine tradition split rather than smoothing over.

exaltation · modern sources only

  • NeptuneWikipedia contributors

Classical horoscopic astrology (Ptolemy's scheme and the medieval tradition following it) assigns no exaltation to Leo at all. The Neptune attribution is a 20th-century psychological-astrology addition, impossible before Neptune's 1846 discovery. This is a clean classical/modern fault line, not just noise.

lucky numbers · modern sources only

  • 1, 3, 10, 19ZodiacSign.com
  • 6, 24, 39, 59, 83California Psychics editors

No overlap at all between the two sets - strong evidence these are independently invented rather than transmitted tradition. Likely too weak to state as tradition at all, even attributed.

birthstone · modern sources only

  • CarnelianHoroscope.com editorial staff
  • Ruby, Yellow topaz, Tiger's eyeCalifornia Psychics editors

Modern gem-trade lists for Leo vary by source and appear to be marketing-driven rather than a settled tradition.

Virgo

date range end · modern sources only

  • Sep 22Cafe Astrology · Horoscope.com editorial staff · AstroZodify (unattributed) · ZodiacSign.com
  • Sep 23Wikipedia contributors

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true ingress moves by year. Bodhastra computes it - see decisions §B1.

mythological identity of the constellation figure · modern sources only

  • Astraea/Dike (goddess of justice, Golden Age myth)Encyclopaedia Britannica editors · Wikipedia contributors
  • Erigone (daughter of Icarius)Wikipedia contributors
  • Demeter or Persephone (grain/underworld goddess)Encyclopaedia Britannica editors · Wikipedia contributors
  • Parthenos (daughter of Apollo and Chrysothemis, per Hyginus)Wikipedia contributors

Ancient sources themselves record multiple competing identifications (already true in antiquity, not just a modern-source artifact) - useful as a 'traditions differ' callout.

sixth-house/body-part correspondence · modern sources only

  • Abdomen, digestive organs, spleenDeborah Houlding
  • Intestines, nervous systemHoroscope.com editorial staff

Traditional medical astrology (Skyscript, following classical melothesia) vs. a modern popular listing; both under the attestation floor individually.

Libra

date range boundaries · modern sources only

  • Sept 23 – Oct 22Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com
  • Sept 22 – Oct 23The AstroTwins (Astrostyle)

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true solar ingress moves by year; Bodhastra computes it rather than tabling it — see decisions doc §B1.

lucky colour · modern sources only

  • BlueHoroscope.com editorial staff
  • Pink, GreenZodiacSign.com
  • Pastel green, rose pink, indigo blueCafe Astrology

No consensus at all among modern sites; classical sources (s2) give an entirely different set (black, dark crimson, tawny) tied to planetary colour tables rather than 'lucky colour' marketing copy, which appears to be a 20th-century popularisation with no fixed tradition behind it.

which goddess the Scales personify · modern sources only

  • Astraea (goddess of justice, retreated to the stars)Deborah Houlding
  • Themis (Titaness of divine law, depicted holding scales)Wikipedia contributors

Popular astrology pages often say 'Astraea' without qualification, but Wikipedia's own Astraea entry (s13) states she became the constellation Virgo, not Libra — the Scales-bearing goddess most consistently identified in reference sources is Themis. Human should double-check this nuance before publishing; it is a common but sourced error to simply say 'Libra = Astraea's scales.'

compatibility with earth signs (Virgo, Capricorn) · modern sources only

  • Low / least compatible (romantic pairing)The AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Beneficial partnership (professional/complementary pairing)Horoscope.com editorial staff

Not a contradiction so much as a domain split — the same sign pair is scored differently depending on whether the source is discussing romance or working partnerships. Worth preserving as a domain-specific nuance rather than collapsing to one verdict.

Scorpio

ruling planet · modern sources only

  • PlutoWikipedia contributors · Cafe Astrology · SunSigns.org editors · ZodiacSign.com

All pre-1930 sources give Mars as sole ruler (Pluto was not discovered until 1930). Post-discovery astrologers largely reassigned rulership to Pluto but most modern sources (s12, s21) explicitly retain Mars as a co-ruler rather than replacing it outright. Bodhastra should present this as a tradition split by era, not pick one.

date range start · modern sources only

  • October 23Wikipedia contributors · Horoscope.com editorial staff · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · ZodiacSign.com
  • October 24Encyclopaedia Britannica editors

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true tropical ingress moves by year (leap-year drift). Bodhastra computes it rather than sourcing a fixed date - see decisions doc §B1, same pattern as the Leo example in this directory's README.

Taurus compatibility · modern sources only

  • high (compatible)ZodiacSign.com
  • mixed/ambivalent (opposition sign - works very well or not at all)Today.com / NBC editorial staff

Taurus is Scorpio's zodiacal opposite. Opposition-sign pairings are genuinely read two ways across the tradition - some sources treat opposites as complementary, others as a coin-flip - and this isn't a lineage artifact, both readings recur independently.

body-part correspondence · modern sources only

  • Genital organs, bladder, bowels (reproductive/eliminative system)Cafe Astrology · Horoscope.com editorial staff

An early search pass surfaced a fragment attributed to Lilly's Christian Astrology giving Scorpio's body rulership as 'the Haunches, and the Navill to the Buttocks' - but that phrase is the traditional attribution for a different sign (loins/reins) in the standard classical melothesia (Aries=head...Scorpio=genitals...Sagittarius=hips/thighs), so it looks like a table-row extraction error rather than a real classical variant. Not included as a variant above. A human should verify Scorpio's body-part entry directly against a clean scan of Christian Astrology Book III before this correspondence is trusted at classical-source weight.

secondary symbol · modern sources only

  • The Scorpion onlyEncyclopaedia Britannica editors · Wikipedia contributors · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com
  • The Scorpion, with the Eagle as a higher/esoteric symbolCafe Astrology

Esoteric astrology (the Alan Leo-descended school) is known for teaching a three-symbol ladder for Scorpio - Scorpion / Eagle / Phoenix (sometimes Dove) - representing stages of spiritual evolution. This session could not obtain a direct primary-source fetch confirming that scheme (theoi.com and archive.org fetches for Alan Leo's own works were blocked), so only the single modern attestation of the Eagle is recorded. Worth a follow-up fetch of Leo's 'Esoteric Astrology' or 'The Art of Synthesis' directly from archive.org.

  • Nov 23 – Dec 21Wikipedia contributors · Labyrinthos
  • Nov 23 – Dec 22The AstroTwins (Astrostyle)

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true tropical ingress moves by year and time zone. Bodhastra computes it rather than hard-coding a table — see decisions §B1.

identity of the constellation figure · modern sources only

  • Human archer (the satyr Crotus, inventor of archery, per Eratosthenes)Wikipedia contributors
  • Horse-centaur (Chiron in Greek myth; a winged, dual-headed composite in Babylonian iconography)Wikipedia contributors · Encyclopaedia Britannica editors

Wikipedia's own astrology article explicitly flags this as an unresolved classification question. Firmicus Maternus's degree-by-degree body scheme (head/face/mouth/neck/hands/bow/back/horse's belly/hind legs/tail) presumes the centaur form, favoring that reading in the classical layer.

identity of the Babylonian god behind the sign · modern sources only

  • Pabilsag, 'the chief ancestor', later identified with NinurtaWikipedia contributors
  • Nergal, a war-god depicted as a winged, dual-headed centaur-archerWikipedia contributors

Two reference-tier sources (both Wikipedia) give differing identifications for the same figure. Needs verification against a primary Assyriological source before this goes in the origins hub as settled fact — flagged for human review.

lucky colour · modern sources only

  • TurquoiseCafe Astrology · Indie and Harper
  • BlueZodiacSign.com

Below the 3-source floor either way; correspondence tables like this look more like independent modern invention than shared tradition.

ruling gemstone · modern sources only

  • TopazCafe Astrology
  • TurquoiseIndie and Harper

Also below the attestation floor; recorded for completeness. Note Turquoise appears as both a 'colour' and a 'stone' claim across different sites, which suggests conflation rather than two independent traditions.

Capricorn

date range · modern sources only

  • Dec 22 – Jan 19Wikipedia contributors · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · SunSigns.org editors · Emily Ratay, YourTango
  • Dec 23 – Jan 20SunSigns.org editors

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true tropical ingress moves by year; Alan Leo's 1899 edition and SunSigns.org both round differently than the Dec 22 consensus. Bodhastra computes it — see decisions §B1.

core temperament: stability vs. instability · modern sources only

  • reliable / constant / disciplined / steadfastCafe Astrology · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · SunSigns.org editors · ZodiacSign.com

Raphael's 1828 Guide to Astrology gives a strikingly negative temperament (sharp, subtle, capricious, covetous, envious, jealous, crafty, selfish, unstable) that is nearly the inverse of the steadiness that dominates every modern trait list. This may reflect ascendant-based physiognomy delineation rather than sun-sign character-reading, or a genuine drift in the tradition over two centuries. A human should check the primary text directly (djvu OCR quality is imperfect) before using this in prose.

lucky colour · modern sources only

  • Brown, GreySunSigns.org editors
  • Purple, BrownThe AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Brown, BlackZodiacSign.com
  • Dark blueHoroscope.com editorial staff

No two modern sites agree, and no classical source assigns Capricorn a colour at all — this correspondence appears to be a 20th-century popular-astrology invention with no shared lineage among the four sites checked.

lucky stone · modern sources only

  • GarnetSunSigns.org editors
  • Onyx, AmberThe AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Lapis lazuliHoroscope.com editorial staff

Same pattern as lucky colour: three sources, three different answers, no classical antecedent. Likely each site draws on a different birthstone/gem-astrology system.

modality (movable vs. fixed) · modern sources only

  • Cardinal / MovableWikipedia contributors · Cafe Astrology · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com

Raphael's Guide to Astrology (per OCR'd djvu text pulled from archive.org) describes Capricorn as "earthy, fixed, and barren," which conflicts with Lilly's explicit "Cardinall, Moveable" and the near-universal modern consensus. This could be a genuine variant classification, but is more likely an OCR/extraction error or a passage about an adjacent sign misattributed during retrieval. FLAG FOR HUMAN VERIFICATION against a clean scan before treating as a real classical variant.

Aquarius

ruling planet · modern sources only

  • SaturnCafe Astrology · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com
  • UranusCafe Astrology · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com · Acharya Rajesh Gupta, DuAstro

Every pre-1781 classical source (Ptolemy, Lilly, Sepharial) gives Saturn, since Uranus was undiscovered until 1781 and not adopted as a sign-ruler until 19th/20th-century astrologers assigned it. Every modern site treats Uranus as primary but most still footnote Saturn as the 'traditional' ruler. Bodhastra should present both, framed by era rather than as a resolved fact.

start-of-sign date · modern sources only

  • January 20Jaime McLeod, Farmers' Almanac · Cafe Astrology · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · ZodiacSign.com · Acharya Rajesh Gupta, DuAstro
  • about January 21Richard A. Parker

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true tropical ingress moves by year and time zone; encyclopedia-style sources hedge with 'about'. Bodhastra computes the ingress rather than sourcing a fixed date — see decisions §B1.

Greek mythological identity of the constellation figure

  • Ganymede, cupbearer of the godsWilliam Tyler Olcott · Jaime McLeod, Farmers' Almanac
  • Deucalion, survivor of the floodWilliam Tyler Olcott
  • Cecrops, legendary Egyptian founder of AthensWilliam Tyler Olcott

Olcott (s4) itself records these as competing ancient identifications rather than a settled myth; Ganymede is the version that survived into popular modern retellings (s7).

Pisces

ruling planet · modern sources only

  • JupiterWikipedia contributors · Horoscope.com editorial staff · Deborah Houlding
  • NeptuneWikipedia contributors · The AstroTwins (Astrostyle) · Horoscope.com editorial staff · Deborah Houlding · California Psychics editors

Classical/traditional sources uniformly give Jupiter, the domicile lord known since Hellenistic astrology. Modern sources give Neptune, assigned after its 1846 discovery on the logic that its watery, dissolving, boundary-blurring character matches Pisces better than any other unclaimed planet. Notably, Alan Leo (s8, writing pre-1917 in a theosophical/esoteric register) already lists Neptune as ruling Pisces' 'strong house' — earlier than most popular modern sources — suggesting the esoteric-astrology wing adopted Neptune well before it became the mainstream-consensus modern ruler. Bodhastra should present both, labelled classical vs modern, not pick one.

sun-sign date range (end date) · modern sources only

  • Mar 19The AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Mar 20Wikipedia contributors · Horoscope.com editorial staff

Fixed-table sites disagree because the true ingress into Aries moves by year. Bodhastra computes it rather than hard-coding a table value — see decisions doc §B1.

lucky colour · modern sources only

  • Sea-greenHoroscope.com editorial staff
  • AquamarineCalifornia Psychics editors

Both are single-source modern-lifestyle-content claims (neither site names an author or date); treat as folklore-tier, not tradition. Too thin to publish as consensus.

birthstone · modern sources only

  • MoonstoneThe AstroTwins (Astrostyle)
  • Jade / Pearl / AmethystCalifornia Psychics editors

No convergence found across the sources collected; likely each site is drawing on a different, uncredited gem-lore tradition (Western modern birthstone lists vs. metaphysical-crystal lists are not the same lineage).

Why none of these is settled here

Some of these disagreements have a right answer, and a few of them almost certainly do. Libra’s scales are a good example: popular pages very often say Astraea, and reference sources more consistently give Themis on the grounds that Astraea became the constellation Virgo rather than Libra.

We have one source each way. Publishing that as a correction would put us in the position of the authority — which is exactly the move this whole site exists to question, and it would be unsourced in the same paragraph where it accused others of being unsourced. So it stays a disagreement until it is properly checked, and the check is recorded when it happens.
