Beth-Luis-Nion · thirteen trees · one modern reconstruction
The tree calendar has an author
Robert Graves constructed this thirteen-month scheme in The White Goddess (1948). It became a living modern Pagan calendar. It is not an ancient Celtic zodiac recovered from ogham stones.
The thirteen tree months
Real ogham, invented calendar
Ogham inscriptions are real early Irish writing, mainly surviving on fourth- to sixth-century stones. Medieval scholars also recorded letter names and plant glosses.
Neither body of evidence turns thirteen letters into birth months. Graves selected and reordered material into a poetic calendar. Separate the evidence layers →
A calculator for the modern version
The calculator implements the popular fixed Gregorian ranges derived from thirteen 28-day months. It leaves 23 December outside every tree rather than hiding the intercalary day. Find the modern tree sign →
