Calculators · modern civil eto

Your Japanese eto

This calculator uses the Gregorian civil year adopted in Japan from 1873. Every date from 1 January through 31 December has the same year pair; there is no lunar-new-year rollover in this modern Japanese contract.

Supported dates: 1873–2100. The lower bound is historical, not computational: before 1873, Japan used lunisolar calendars and requires a different conversion method.

Why the calculator stops at 1873

The reform did not merely rename an already-Gregorian date. Meiji 5, month 12, day 3 was made 1 January of Meiji 6, removing the rest of that old month from the official calendar.

A pre-1873 result therefore needs the historical calendar and date notation actually in force. See the reform and boundary evidence →
