Jyotisha — the sidereal zodiac of India, fixed to the stars rather than to the seasons.

Facts & lineage · ayanamsa

Sidereal still needs a zero

Ayanamsa is the angular separation between the seasonal and sidereal zero points. Different schools choose different reference stars or historical anchors, so a calculator that says only “Vedic” has hidden an input.

Why this calculator says Lahiri

The Indian Calendar Reform Committee fixed the reference at 23°15′ on 21 March 1956. Lahiri remains the official setting used for the Indian Astronomical Ephemeris. Bodhastra anchors there and propagates the angle with the IAU P03 precession model.

That is a transparent implementation choice, not a claim that every Jyotisha school agrees with it. Near a boundary, compare the ayanamsa used by the school you follow.
