Facts & lineage · calendar contract
“Tibetan calendar” is a family name
Phugpa is the most widely used version and the one followed by the Dalai Lama's institutions. Tsurphu and other versions remain living calculations, not errors to smooth away.
What changes
Tibetan months are lunar but numbered through a solar framework. Leap months, skipped dates and repeated dates reconcile clocks that do not divide evenly.
Different calculation lineages use different constants and rules. Janson documents cases where their calendars differ by a day and cases where the month numbering differs. A date converter is therefore a model with a name, not a neutral lookup table.
Bodhastra's contract
The calculator implements Janson's Phugpa formulas through an auditable MIT-licensed library, supports 1900–2100, prints the calculated Losar, and labels every result Phugpa. It does not silently choose a local festival date from another community.
