we can't be friends (wait for your love)

what it is about

the surface reading is a break-up song that refuses the usual consolation. the phrase in the title is not a rejection of somebody's friendship offer so much as a statement that the softer option is not available — that the thing has to be over rather than downgraded.

the second reading, which almost everybody arrives at and which she has not disputed, is that a good deal of the album is addressed to the press and the public rather than to a person. the eighteen months before it were the most heavily covered of her life, and several tracks on eternal sunshine read differently once you allow that the you in them is not always a partner.

the video

a genuine short film, and the most narratively ambitious thing in her videography. she plays a woman named peaches undergoing a procedure to have a relationship erased; evan peters plays the person being erased. the framework is lifted openly from michel gondry's eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, which is also where the album's title comes from.

the structure does the same work the film's does: as the memories are deleted she moves backwards through them, so the sequence gets happier as it goes and the ending is the beginning. it was nominated for five awards at the 2024 mtv video music awards, including video of the year, and won best cinematography.

the record itself

the production is the coldest on the album — a sparse synth bed, very little percussion for the first half, and a vocal placed unusually far forward. the chorus does not lift the way one of her choruses normally does; it stays level, which is what makes the last thirty seconds land when the harmony stack finally arrives.

it debuted at number one on the hot 100, her eighth, and it is now one of her six most streamed songs, above 7 rings-era material that was far bigger at the time. that is the mark of a song people go back to rather than one they were served.
