what it sounds like

nothing else in her catalogue. live-sounding drums, real backing vocal arrangements, a lot of doo-wop chord movement and a nineties r&b vocabulary that had been out of fashion for a decade when it came out. it is the only record of hers with no electronic production ambitions at all.

the reason is partly the producers — harmony samuels across most of it, babyface on a track, leon thomas iii from victorious writing — and partly the constraint. it was recorded over nearly two years, in pieces, around a television schedule, which produces a record made of songs rather than a record made as a project.

the songs that hold

• the way, with mac miller. the lead single, built on a big pun sample, and the first thing most people heard. it is also where that relationship begins, which colours it permanently.
• honeymoon avenue. the opener, and the most ambitious vocal arrangement on the record. still the deep cut her audience picks first.
• daydreamin'. the purest doo-wop thing on it, and the clearest demonstration that the harmony stacking was there from the first record.
• tattooed heart. almost nothing but a vocal and a chord. it is the track that proves the voice needed no production help at nineteen.

the number one nobody expected

that concurrency is the actual story of this record. she was under contract to a nickelodeon sitcom while holding the number one album in america, and the production was writing around her absences. the show was cancelled eleven months later.

what it does not have

a hit as large as the ones that followed. nothing on it charted like problem would a year later, and by the standards of everything after it the record is a modest commercial object. it is also the only album of hers with no number one single and no grammy nomination.

what it does have is proof of the instrument. play tattooed heart and then play anything from petal thirteen years later and the through-line is not the production, the persona or the subject matter. it is that both records are built on somebody who can sing quietly and be heard.
