the rules

photographs
every photograph here is a real photograph under a creative-commons licence, sourced from wikimedia commons or flickr and verified file by file — licences vary within a category, so none is assumed from the category it sits in. no ai-generated imagery appears anywhere on this site, and press photography, getty and pinterest are never used.
when there is no licensed photo
this happens more often than you would expect: most press photography of an artist this size is copyrighted and unavailable. those sections get a designed treatment instead — original typography in the era's palette, a data visualisation, or an official embed. a section without a licensed photo gets a designed answer, never a compromised one.
album artwork
served directly by apple through the itunes search api and always shown next to a link out to the store, which is the basis on which it is supplied. artwork is never downloaded, rehosted, or put through cloudinary.
audio and video
no audio file is hosted, cached or proxied here. thirty-second previews play from apple's own urls and full tracks play on youtube, spotify or apple music. user microphone audio in the singing games never leaves the device and is never recorded.
lyrics
lyrics are a separate copyright held by publishers, and none are reproduced on this site. songs are described and analysed instead, and every song page links out to a licensed lyrics source.
text and facts
biographical and discographical facts are cross-checked against wikipedia and wikidata, which are licensed cc by-sa — reused here under that licence. all editorial writing is original.
