1. eternal sunshine (2024). the most complete thing she has made: a break-up record built as a concept album, with no filler and no showpiece, that gets colder rather than louder as it goes. it is also the only one where the sequencing does real work.
2. sweetener (2018). half of it is the strangest production on any of her records and the other half is the best singles run. the seam is a flaw and the record is better for having taken the risk.
3. positions (2020). the most underrated, and the one that changed what the last two sound like. no whistle showpiece, no attempt to impress, and pov at the end of it.
4. thank u, next (2019). the most important and not the best. written and cut in weeks, and it sounds like it in both the good and the bad sense — immediate, raw, and uneven in its back half.
5. petal (2026). too recent to place with confidence, and provisionally fifth. the sparsest arrangements of her career and the bluntest writing. it may well move up this list in five years.
6. dangerous woman (2016). contains into you, which is arguably the best single she has released, and does not sustain that level across the record.
7. my everything (2014). four enormous singles attached to an album that is mostly a delivery mechanism for them.
8. yours truly (2013). last, and not by much. it is charming, it is coherent, and it is the work of somebody who had not yet decided what she was.

the argument you will want to have

the top two. the case for sweetener over eternal sunshine is that it took a much larger risk and that a flawed ambitious record beats a flawless controlled one. the case the other way is that eternal sunshine does not have a weak track and sweetener has three.

the second argument is positions at three. it was received as a minor record in 2020 and it is now audibly the hinge of the whole late catalogue — the moment she stopped writing songs that needed a big note in them. everything from 2024 onward proceeds from it.
