the slow climb

this is the interesting part and it is not a story about the song changing. holiday records now behave like catalogue assets rather than singles: every december the entire streaming population plays the same forty songs, and the chart re-ranks them against a year of ordinary releases. under those conditions a good christmas song does not peak — it compounds.

it is now her twelfth most streamed song on spotify, above every song from sweetener bar one, and it accumulates nearly all of that in about six weeks a year.

why this one and not the others

she has a whole christmas ep — christmas kisses, from 2013 — and none of the rest of it has done this. what santa tell me has that they do not is the thing every durable holiday record has: it is not actually about christmas. it is a song about not wanting to be hurt again, using christmas as the setting and the deadline. that gives it somewhere to go emotionally that a song about snow does not have.

who wrote it

grande with savan kotecha and ilya salmanzadeh, the pair responsible for a large part of my everything. salmanzadeh is still with her a decade later, co-executive-producing petal, which makes this song an early data point in the longest working relationship of her career. the piece on who writes her songs covers the rest of that.

the annuity

worth stating plainly, because it is unusual: a holiday standard is the closest thing the music business has to a pension. it earns every year, requires no promotion, needs no tour, and does not depend on the artist doing anything at all. for somebody who has just announced a step back from public life, owning one is not a trivial detail.
