why london, and why ten

the tour is forty-one dates across eleven cities in three countries, and a quarter of it is in one building. that is not a routing accident. she spent most of 2022 to 2025 working in the united kingdom on the wicked films, and the london relationship that came out of it is real enough to have produced a west end announcement as well.

there is also the other reason. the last time she played this city, in 2019, the shows became the only concert film she has released. and the reason the relationship with britain is what it is at all runs through manchester rather than through anything commercial.

what the residency has produced

• 15 august. kiss me and bad thing (bunny hop), both from petal, in the same night's surprise-song slots.
• 16 august. cynthia erivo for two songs — for good from wicked, and a judy garland and streisand medley. the only night on the whole run with two guest duets.
• the rest. ten consecutive nights in one room with the band as tight as it will ever be, which is the ideal condition for the surprise slots and is why the london leg has produced more of them than the entire north american leg.

what a ten-night run actually requires

about 200,000 tickets in one city, which is a number very few artists can sell in a single market. the o2 holds roughly 20,000 and ten consecutive nights means filling it every night without the audience thinning — which is a different test from selling out one show in ten cities.

it is also cheaper to produce. a residency loads in once and stays, which removes the single largest cost in modern touring. that economics is why multi-night runs in fewer cities have replaced the eighty-eight-date, four-continent routing she used in 2015.
