the ones from the work

• moonlight. the title her third album carried before it became dangerous woman, retained as a track and adopted by the audience as a name for that whole abandoned direction.
• peaches. the character she plays in the we can't be friends video and again, seventy years older, in brighter days ahead. it has become a shorthand for that whole run of work.
• glinda. unavoidable since 2024, and the first time a character has attached itself to her this firmly since cat valentine.
• babydoll. now the name of her own record imprint, carrying petal, which makes it the first of these to become a legal entity.

the one she has objected to

cat, which is a different case

for six years cat valentine was effectively her public name, and shaking it took until dangerous woman in 2016. that is not a nickname so much as a role she had to be released from, and the piece on those years covers how completely it defined the early reception of her records.

the pattern worth noticing across all of it: the names that stuck are the ones she chose or made — ari, peaches, babydoll — and the ones imposed on her, cat and arianator, are the two she has visibly worked against.

the ones the press invented

a separate and less flattering category. the pop press spent the mid-2010s attaching a title to her every eighteen months — a princess of this, a queen of that — none of which she has ever used and most of which were coined to set up a rivalry with somebody. they have not stuck, which is the usual fate of a name assigned by a headline writer.

the durable ones on this page are all either hers or her audience's. that is the pattern with nicknames generally, and it is why a fandom name she publicly dislikes has outlasted every title a magazine gave her.
