hairspray live!

a live network musical performed once with no second takes, eight years before anybody thought to cast her in a film musical.

the short answer

she played penny pingleton, tracy turnblad's best friend, in nbc's hairspray live! on 7 december 2016. she called it a dream role. the cast included harvey fierstein, jennifer hudson, kristin chenoweth, martin short and derek hough. it was broadcast live, once, with no opportunity to fix anything.

what a live television musical actually is

a full stage musical, staged across multiple sets, performed once, broadcast as it happens. there is no editing, no second take and no way to stop. sound is a nightmare, blocking is a nightmare, and everything that goes wrong goes wrong in front of the audience.

that is a demanding format for a trained theatre performer and a genuinely unforgiving one for a pop star. she had done it before — broadway at fourteen — which is the whole reason this went the way it did.

the part

penny pingleton is tracy's slightly odd best friend, and it is a comic supporting role in a show whose leads take all the weight. it is also, structurally, exactly the same job as glinda: the funny one next to the one carrying the story, who has to be genuinely funny and genuinely able to sing at the same time.

where it sits in 2016

december 2016 is seven months after dangerous woman and five months before manchester. it is the last thing of any size she did before the event that divides her career, and it is the part of that year almost nobody remembers.

the audition nobody called an audition

eight years later she self-taped for wicked and the industry treated it as a pop star trying something new. by then she had a broadway credit, a live network musical and a decade of orchestral and choral training behind her. hairspray live! is the middle piece of that evidence and it is the one that got the least attention.

it is also findable. the screen section has where to watch it, alongside the rest of the television work.

the format, and what happened to it

live network musicals were a genuine television phenomenon between 2013 and 2018 — nbc and fox produced one most years, each drawing audiences in the millions. hairspray live! sits near the end of that run, and the format has essentially disappeared since.

that gives her credit a scarcity it did not have at the time. there is now a very short list of people who have carried a role in a live network musical, and an even shorter one of people who did it before being cast in a film musical that made $1.5 billion across two parts.
