grande verse

she was on broadway at fourteen, two years before the television. the singing was never the second job — it was the first one.

the short answer

she made her professional debut on broadway in 2008, aged fourteen, as charlotte in 13 — the only broadway show ever staged with an entirely teenage cast and band. she won a national youth theatre association award for it. she has not returned to a stage since, and withdrew in 2026 from a west end production she had been announced for.

13, and why it matters

13 opened at the bernard b. jacobs theatre on 5 october 2008 and closed on 4 january 2009 after 22 previews and 105 performances. jason robert brown wrote it. its distinguishing feature is that everybody on stage and everybody in the pit was a teenager, which had never been done on broadway before and has not been since.

grande started in the ensemble and was given the named role of charlotte in the pre-broadway run. she was fourteen. two years before nickelodeon, five years before a record deal, and sixteen years before wicked, she was already a working musical theatre performer with a broadway credit.

why this changes the wicked story

the standard framing of her casting as glinda is pop star crosses over into musicals. the accurate framing is the reverse: a musical theatre performer spent fifteen years making pop records and then went back. the self-tape that got her the part was not somebody trying something new, and the technical singing in the film is not a surprise if you know that the broadway credit came first.

it is also why she keeps saying, in interviews, that the stage is where she would most like to end up. she has been explicit that returning to theatre would be the dream rather than the fallback.

the return that did not happen

in 2025 she was announced for a west end revival of stephen sondheim's sunday in the park with george at the barbican, opposite jonathan bailey, for a run in 2027. it would have been her first stage performance in nineteen years and the first of her career as an adult.

she withdrew in august 2026, as part of the break she announced that month. the production said it would go ahead without her, and by several accounts learned of the decision with only hours to prepare a statement.

the rest of the stage work

there is not much, which is the point. a workshop or two, some concert-staged appearances, and one performance of a sondheim number at a tribute event. everything else in the filmography is screen work. the theatre career is 105 performances in 2008 and an intention that keeps not quite happening.
