the timeline
20 turning points, 2008 to 2026. the coloured markers are the album eras; the rest is everything that happened around them.
2008
broadway, at fourteen
cast in the musical 13 as charlotte. the singing was never the second career — it was the first one, and the television came after.
2010
victorious
cast as cat valentine on nickelodeon. it made her famous and it defined how she was read for the next six years, which is most of the story of the early records.
2013
yours truly
a debut album of doo-wop and 90s r&b released into a year of festival edm. an unfashionable bet that a voice that size did not need help.
2014
my everything
the hard pivot into dance-pop twelve months later, and the beginning of the max martin partnership that reshaped how she builds a song.
2016
dangerous woman
the record that stopped asking permission. originally titled moonlight; the change of title is the change of thesis.
2017
manchester
a suicide bombing at the manchester arena killed twenty-two people leaving her concert. she suspended the tour and went home.
one love manchester
she returned to the city thirteen days later to stage a benefit concert for the victims' families. it is the event that changed public understanding of her more than any record has.
2018
sweetener
half produced by pharrell williams, structurally odd, and explicitly about recovering from the previous year without pretending that is a straight line.
2019
thank u, next
six months after sweetener. written fast, recorded close to the microphone, and the record that made her the biggest pop star in the world.
grammy — best pop vocal album
sweetener won at the 61st ceremony. her first grammy, for the least commercial record she had made.
the top three, all at once
she held the top three positions on the billboard hot 100 simultaneously — the first act to manage it since the beatles in 1964.
2020
positions
released with almost no rollout into the back half of 2020. chamber r&b, performed strings, and the quietest record in the catalogue.
2021
grammy — best pop duo/group performance
for rain on me, with lady gaga. a straightforwardly euphoric dance record released into a year that badly needed one.
don't look up
a supporting role in adam mckay's satire, and the first sign that the screen career was going to be a real second track rather than a hobby.
2024
eternal sunshine
a break-up record shaped like a concept album, arriving after four years mostly spent on a film set. the coldest-sounding thing she has made.
wicked
cast as glinda in the first half of the two-part film adaptation. it reintroduced her to an audience with no relationship to her music at all.
2025
academy award nomination
nominated for best supporting actress for wicked — an unusual crossing for a pop musician, and not a token one.
wicked: for good
the second half of the adaptation, and the end of a role that took the better part of four years.
2026
the eternal sunshine tour begins
opening at oakland arena — her first tour since 2019, running through the summer across north america and the uk.
petal
twelve tracks, self-executive-produced with ilya salmanzadeh, and the first black-and-white visual era since 2016.
