who he is

an english stage actor with an olivier award, widely known from bridgerton, and one of the few people in the wicked cast whose theatre credentials predate the film work by a decade. he is a trained singer, which the part requires and which most film fiyeros have not been.

the four years

both films were shot back to back, which means the principal cast spent roughly four years in each other's company — the longest continuous working stretch of grande's career by a wide margin. the friendship that came out of it was visible across both press cycles and is of a piece with the one she formed with cynthia erivo.

fiyero is the hardest part in wicked to make interesting. on stage he is largely a device — the man both women want, written thinly enough that the audience is never asked to care about him independently. the second film gives him considerably more, and bailey is most of the reason that lands.

the sondheim plan

in 2025 the barbican announced a revival of sunday in the park with george starring bailey and grande, for a run in 2027. it would have been her first stage performance since 13 in 2008, and her first as an adult.

what happened

she withdrew in august 2026, as part of stepping back from public-facing work after her tour. the production said it would continue without her, and by several accounts learned of the decision with only hours to prepare a statement. bailey has not commented publicly.

the piece of it worth registering: this was the return to the stage she had been saying for years that she wanted. it is not a project that was cancelled — it is one she chose not to do, which is a different and considerably more telling thing.
