the lawsuits

she has been sued over a song, sued a clothing retailer over an advert, and is now suing a group of people nobody can name.

the short answer

three matter. she was sued over 7 rings by songwriter josh stone, which was settled. she sued forever 21 in 2019 for using a lookalike in adverts after a campaign deal collapsed, which also settled. and in july 2026 she sued up to a hundred unidentified defendants over years of music leaks.

7 rings, and the claims against it

the song attracted more copyright attention than anything else she has released. songwriter josh stone brought a suit alleging it copied his work; it was settled. separately, two rappers publicly said the record borrowed from theirs without bringing proceedings. the 7 rings piece has the full account of the credits and the backlash.

forever 21

the one she brought. in 2019 she sued the retailer for $10 million, alleging it had run a campaign using a model made up and styled to look like her, with imagery echoing her videos, after negotiations for an actual endorsement deal fell apart. the case settled.

it is a more interesting case than it sounds. the claim was about likeness rather than about photographs — that a company had constructed something recognisable as her without her. given how much of her public identity is a silhouette rather than a face, that is a live question.

the 2026 leak case

filed in california in july 2026, days before petal. it names up to a hundred unidentified defendants and alleges a years-long phishing campaign against her photographers and producers, hundreds of leaks since 2011, forty-five songs stolen in 2023 alone, and material sold on the dark web. the claims are invasion of privacy, computer hacking and conversion.

it is by a wide margin the most substantial legal action of her career and it is unresolved. the fuller account is here.

what is not on this list

  • the manchester litigation. the inquiry and the proceedings that followed the 2017 attack concerned the venue, the security arrangements and the perpetrator. she was not a party.
  • the scooter braun split. no litigation. a management contract ended and a business relationship in part continued.
  • the divorce. her marriage to dalton gomez ended in a settled dissolution rather than a contested case.

for a career this long and this valuable, three notable cases is a short list. the striking thing is the direction of the most recent one: for the first time she is the plaintiff in something serious.
