why she did it at all

2021 is the flattest year in her career. positions had come out into a pandemic with no tour attached, she had married in may, and there was no touring, no promotion cycle and no film yet. a television commitment that shoots in one city for a few months is the only kind of work that fits that year.

it is also, straightforwardly, the biggest single television audience available to a musician in america, and she took it at a point when she had not been in front of a general audience for eighteen months.

what she was actually like on it

unusually technical. the format rewards coaches who give encouragement and a story; she gave notes — about breath placement, about where a vowel was sitting, about not decorating a melody before earning it. it made for slightly less television and considerably better singing, and it is why the season is well regarded by people who care about the singing rather than the show.

how the season went

she performed in the finale with kid cudi — just look up, from the film they had both shot that year, which was released a week later.

the money, and why it was reported

her fee was widely reported at the time as the largest ever paid to a coach on the show, and it became a story of its own. it is worth treating with the same caution as every other figure attached to her — the net worth piece sets out why published numbers about her earnings are estimates rather than facts, and no contract figure has ever been confirmed by anybody with access to one.

what a coaching chair actually is

not a judging job. the format asks a coach to select a team blind, then rehearse and arrange for them across several months, which is closer to producing than to assessing. that is the part she was visibly good at: the arrangements her team performed were consistently more considered than the show's default of transpose-it-up-and-belt.

it also put her in a room with young singers at roughly the age she was when nickelodeon cast her, which she referred to on the show more than once. she was noticeably careful about what she promised them.

why she never came back

no public reason was given, and the timing supplies an obvious one: wicked began shooting in late 2022 and occupied the following four years almost entirely. a coach's chair requires a season's worth of availability every year and she has not had one since.

one season is also, on the evidence of the rest of her television record, simply what she does. scream queens was one season. sam & cat was one season, though not by choice. she has never signed on to anything episodic for a second year, and given the 2026 step back there is no sign of that changing.
